Marketed in Japan in the early sixties, the model which was to become the 323 was at that time called the Familia. It was only in 1977 that the compact Mazda model took the name of 323 in export markets. Versions with 3 and 5 door bodywork were offered in Europe, while in Japan there was also a 5-door estate-car. Other generations followed and increasing numbers of variants appeared, including a 4-wheel drive transmission, mated to a 143 bhp 1.6 litre turbo engine. A development of this mechanical set-up would compete from 1986 onwards in the Group A category of the World Rally Championship. The fourth generation came out in 1989 with a choice of 5 different petrol engines, going from the little 75 bhp 1.3 litre unit to the 1.8 litre turbo-charged engine of the GTR version, with an output of 185 bhp.

The car in our sale is a 4th generation model, first registered on 23rd March 1991. It is a 323 F GLX 16V, fitted with a 1 600 cc engine producing 88 bhp. Her one and only owner bought her in Paris from the Mazda concessionaire Austerlitz Automobiles. All the original documents are neatly filed in a wallet and not a single maintenance invoice is missing from the original purchase until 31st May 2018. The service booklet contains records of all the scheduled maintenance visits. There is also a spare set of keys. This vehicle is well equipped with the following options : electric windows, air-conditioning, alloy wheels, radio cassette and Tiger alarm system. With a verified odometer reading of only 96 675 km, this Mazda 323 functions perfectly. The owner has taken care to drive her around the Bois de Boulogne at least once a week. Having received proper regular maintenance throughout her existence, this little Mazda will still do good service for many more years.
