The company known for its trident logo was the author of two great stories. The first was set before the war, during that glorious period beginning in 1926 when Maserati built racing cars. In the 1950s, alongside its racing cars, Maserati went into roadgoing sports cars with the superb A6 models and later the 3500 GT. At the start of the 1970s, the market had moved on and mid-engined models made their appearance. The first was the magnificent Bora, from which the Merak was directly developed: the Merak was a pretty sports coupé inspired by the designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who was also responsible for the amazing Boomerang and, of course, the Ghibli. Launched in 1972 by Maserati’s parent company, Citroën, the first version – of which 630 cars were built – used the dashboard from the Citroën SM, above all to adhere to its policy of saving costs. The second series was fitted with the dashboard from the Bora and 652 cars came off the line before production ended in 1983.

The Maserati Merak 3.0-litre which we are offering for sale was delivered new in 1975; it is one of the last series 1 models produced, as its dashboard related to that of the Citroën SM confirms. It was purchased in 1988 in the Vaucluse by its new owner, who kept it in his collection until 2013. When he acquired it in January 1988, he carried out a complete overhaul of the engine, gearbox, clutch, brakes and suspension. The Aurelia Garage in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt was responsible for this complete restoration, which also included refurbishing the bodywork and upholstery, for a total of 116,000 francs. Following this work, the owner had a valuation report prepared, in which the condition of the car was described as being perfectly maintained. Registered at the time in the Seine-Saint-Denis department, the owner had his Maserati recorded in the central registry with the registration number 4986 LM 93, which can still be seen engraved on all its windows. The Merak’s registration number was changed in 2003, when its owner decided to settle in the south of France. Now owned by a new collector and talented gentleman driver, the Maserati has just received new paintwork and a general service, with four new Michelin XWX tyres fitted to its original wheels. During our road test, its handling met our expectations, and with just 57,500km (35,730 miles) recorded, this Maserati Merak represents an excellent opportunity to acquire an attractive car at a price which is still reasonable.
