Automotive Work of Art

Many consider the Continental to be one of the most outstanding automotive designs of all time. Influenced by Henry Ford’s style conscious son Edsel and designed by E. T. “Bob” Gregorie the lines of the Continental reflect the forward European design thinking. The blind rear quarter roofline and rear mounted spare give the design the elegance of Hibbard and Darrin, Waterhouse and others.

History of the Model

Since 1932 Edsel Ford had custom cars built for his personal use on a frequent basis. Bob Gregorie personally designed two of the specials including the famed Model 40 that recently returned to Ford family ownership. It was, therefore, not unusual that Edsel Ford, who wintered at the family estate in Palm Beach, Florida, wanted a sensational one-off convertible for his use during the 1938-39 season. His frequent trips to Europe influenced his desire for something “thoroughly continental” and E.T. “Bob” Gregorie sketched the design based on the Lincoln Zephyr.
The car was easily lowered as the Zephyr had a three inch sub-floor and the hood was extended twelve inches. The runningboards were also eliminated. A great deal of cutting, welding and lead filling was required and the original Continental weighed 5,000 pounds.
The styling was a sensation and the reaction was so positive from Edsel’s friends that the Continental was placed in production which continued until 1948.
Its design is so well appreciated that the Museum of Modern Art selected the Continental as one of eight automotive works of art.

Restoration History

This 1940 Continental was acquired from the Ed Weaver estate in 1995 and shortly thereafter noted restorer Nunu Lowery was engaged to freshen the earlier restoration. New Firestone Deluxe Champion tires were installed along with additional paint work. The Honest Charlie Garage in Chattanooga, Tennessee recently detailed the Cabriolet to ensure that its appearance equaled the exceptional mechanical condition.

Market Trend

The 1940 Continental was introduced in May of 1940 as the Lincoln Continental Zephyr and the Zephyr was dropped in September. They are often referred to as Mark 1’s but that was never an official name. It is thought that as few as 60 1940 Lincoln Continentals have survived with 30 in restored condition. The collector car community has long accepted the fact that the Lincoln Continental is an automotive work of art and while it does not offer sports car performance the V12 motor provides ample power for enjoyable touring. The market for properly maintained Full Classics continues to out preform other segments and this 1940 Lincoln Continental will be a solid investment that will be at home on the open road or the show field.

Summary

The 1940 Continental is recognized as an automotive work of art that is easily recognizable with its trend setting rear mounted “Continental” spare tire. This example, while wearing an older restoration, has been properly maintained and has been recently freshened to the highest standard. It is a rare and exciting automobile that represents the “first” in the Continental line.
