Launched for the 1955 vintage, the Jaguar XK 140, although more refined, was generally identical to its predecessor, the sensational XK 120, with the main mechanical modifications being limited to repositioning the engine further forward by 7.5 cm and adopting a rack and pinion steering. The suspension and brakes remained essentially the same as before with stronger torsion bars at the front and telescopic shock absorbers instead of lever shock absorbers at the rear. Externally, the newcomer was distinguished by its modified grille, rear lights incorporating turn signals and large bumpers. The engine was still the 3.4-litre twin-cam six, which now delivered 190 hp as standard. A tighter tiered gearbox allowed better use of the extra power and an overdrive was, for the first time, available as an option. The XK 140 Special Equipment (SE) received Lucas wire wheels, fog lamps and could be controlled with a 210 hp engine, obtained with a Type C cylinder head. The XK 140's performance was much better than its illustrious predecessor and the press was full of praise for it.
This XK 140 SE was built on February 8, 1955 and delivered new to the Hoffman dealership in New York. The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate confirms that the car is still in possession of its original engine and gearbox. It left the factory on February 18, 1955 in pastel blue with a blue interior and a fawn top, and included the optional overdrive. Fully restored in 1995, its owner preferred this very elegant Old English White colour with red and off-white leather upholstery with matching red soft top and cover.
In the same Bordeaux collection since 1993, the car has been carefully and regularly maintained. The rods, nose gear, full brakes, engine mounts and overdrive have been replaced to new, as have the four Dunlop tires changed last year with the addition of an additional fan. It should be noted that the dashboard dials were also renovated in 2018. During our test, the car gave us complete satisfaction. The steering is precise, the brakes are effective and the engine takes its turns perfectly on all gears. The overdrive provides a major additional bonus and the stainless steel exhaust system will delight fans of the Coventry six-cylinder engine fold-out!
