This exciting E-Type was restored and upgraded over a four-year period with the goal of creating a very fast and reliable car for rally events, in addition to exciting and reliable road use. While little is known of its early history, the Jaguar was allegedly used in motorsport competition, including club-level racing and then as a V-8-powered drag racer.
Originally equipped with a 3.8-liter engine, a later and more powerful 4.2-liter unit was sourced and rebuilt by the well-known and respected Jaguar expert and engine builder Tom Curren of Florida. He carefully balanced, blueprinted, and enhanced the 4.2 to near perfection. The engine was mated to a custom five-speed manual transmission as well as custom-made stainless-steel exhaust headers to afford sustained high-speed cruising. Other upgrades include a strengthened frame, which was retained from its racing days (as such no stamped number can be found on the chassis), as well as a large aluminum radiator with electric fans, and a modern electrical system. The carefully selected upgrades ensure reliability without distracting from the original design and character that the E-Type is so greatly admired for.
During restoration, the bodywork was removed from the chassis, stripped to bare metal, and repainted to an extremely high level before reassembly. Every aspect of this E-Type has been rebuilt and improved to provide an even more incredible driving experience. The interior is trimmed in sumptuous black leather and further accented by a wood-rimmed steering wheels and rebuilt gauges. A new set of Dayton wire wheels and radial tires finish off the recently completed restoration. Over $200,000 of restoration receipts are included on file.
A true wolf in sheep’s clothing, this E-Type has been beautifully restored with exhilarating rallying and reliable touring in mind and would surely excel on the open road. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo20.
