Always keen to celebrate its rich history, Ford unveiled the new Ford GT to a stunned crowd of international media at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Developed in secret, Ford’s intention from the start was to return the Blue Oval to Le Mans in 2016, seeking a class win fifty years after Ford swept the podium at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans with the GT40. While the 2005 Ford GT was a retro-inspired homage to the original GT40, the new Ford GT was designed with motorsport at its core, utilizing cutting edge design and advanced materials throughout its construction.
At its heart was Ford’s tried and true 3.5-litre V-6 Ecoboost engine. Sourced from the best-selling F-150 pickup truck, this was anything but a truck engine and the GTs engine was fitted with upgraded turbos, an aluminum intake manifold, unique camshafts, and a custom dry-sump lubrication system. Despite its relatively small displacement, power was rated at an impressive 647 bhp. The chassis was a radically designed carbon-fibre monocoque with lightweight aluminum front and rear subframes. Each body pany is made of carbon fibre with a distinctive aerodynamic channel running from the rear of the doors to the rear of the car. Active aerodynamics and adjustable driving modes and ride height ensure that the car is always properly set up for street or track use. Curb weight of the GT is only 3,354 pounds, and power is put to the road through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Production was handled by Multimatic Motorsports just outside of Toronto, Canada and Ford planned for only one car to be produced per day to ensure that each is carefully crafted to live up to Ford’s grueling standards. The allocation process was extremely selective, with owners having to apply to Ford and prove their case as to why they should be chosen to buy a new GT.
Built to European specifications and designated for German delivery, this attractive Ford GT boasts a rather subtle colour combination of Ingot Silver with black racing stripes. The Ingot Silver paintwork accentuates the car’s beautiful and race-bred design, recalling the GT40s of yesteryear. Also outfitted with matching silver brake calipers and 20” gloss painted wheels in black. Interestingly, the accompanying “general info sheet” for the car shows that the car was delivered without racing stripes, so it is believed these were fitted after delivery.
Today, the car remains in virtually as-new condition throughout, having been driven less than 500 km from new. European-specification GTs are few and far between and have been seldom offered for sale. This wonderfully specified example would surely stand proud in any collection of modern supercars, especially alongside either of its older siblings.
