Known history
Engine overhauled in 2016
Propelled into the limelight at the 1975 Paris Motor Show, the new 308 GTB designed by the Pininfarina design office is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic designs of the Maranello firm. Called 308 ("30" for 3.0 litres and "8" for 8 cylinders), it is based on the chassis of the Dino 308 GT4 with a reduced wheelbase of 21 cm. Under the bonnet is the GT4's V8 four overhead camshaft engine, which is always positioned transversely at the rear and is powered by four Weber 40 twin-body carburettors. The eight cylinders produce 255 horsepower, and the engine block is mated to a five-speed mechanical gearbox. Equipped with a dry sump and featuring a particularly compact, low and tapered silhouette, the 308 GTB will initially be manufactured with a polyester shell that will keep the overall weight down to 1,100 kilos. All these features enable the car to go under 26 seconds from a standing start and to reach a top speed of 260 km/h. The lighter "Vetroresina" version with a polyester shell was only produced in 712 units between 1975 and 1977.
The Ferrari 308 GTB we present in these pages is one of the 712 Vetroresina produced at the time. According to the chassis number and the factory records, it would appear to be the 16th example produced, also imported by Charles Pozzi and delivered new on 9 September 1976 in Paris, as attested by the copy of his warranty booklet. According to the maintenance invoices issued by the Pozzi workshops, the first owner of this Ferrari 308 Vetroresina will have covered a little over 41,000 kilometres at the wheel in just two years! In fact, he sold it at the beginning of 1978 to its second owner who lived in Blaye in the Bordeaux region. Two years later, the car will be bought by another gentleman living in the Finistère department, and then at the end of 1984, in the Yvelines. During all this period, this car was constantly maintained at Pozzi workshops and will have been particularly used for a Ferrari of that time, with almost 110,000 kilometres in just 10 years! In 1993, our 308 moved to the Jura department where it remained this time for almost twenty years before being acquired by a Belgian rally driver who will undertake a complete engine restoration in 2016, entrusted to the Wilmi Motorsport engine specialist. The total cost of the invoice is just over 15,300 euros. It will return to France again in 2019 where its current owner will have taken care of repainting the bodywork. This 308 GTB Vetroresina has kept its original interior, beautifully patinated and fully cleaned. With just over 140,000 kilometres to date, a new paintwork and an interior with a beautiful original patina, this 308 has some unique features not to be missed.
This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in Paris, France, on March the 21th, 2021.
