Facel Vega is another name that resonates in the ears of all lovers of beautiful cars. This sadly defunct brand is still in everyone's mind and resonates as a synonym for luxury and performance à la Française. Founded by Jean Daninos in 1939, the Forges et Ateliers de Construction d'Eure-et-Loire (FACEL) specialized in aeronautical manufacturer and the supply of pressed metal. After the war, the company produced bodywork for Panhard, Simca and Ford France, before going into car manufacturing for its own account with the launch of the Facel Vega at the Paris Motor Show in 1954. The Vega, a luxurious grand tourer owes its name to the brightest star in the Lyra constellation and featured an extremely elegant coupé body. Not finding a suitable French engine with sufficient power, Daninos turned to the United States to find the Chrysler V8 for his car, with a choice of either a push-button automatic or a manual transmission. It was launched in 1961 at the Paris Motor Show, the car that would compete with both the Ferrari 250 and the Mercedes 300 SL would be presented as the "fastest 4-seater coupe in the world". Production of its predecessor, the HK 500, had amounted to around 500 units between 1958 and 1961 that of the Facel II peaked at 182 units before the brand went bankrupt in 1964.
The Facel 2 that we present to you was built in October 1962 and ordered in the USA by the local agent Mr Hoffman from New York. Silver-grey with red leather interior, it is equipped with a 3 speed automatic gearbox "torqueflite", Borrani wire wheels and air-conditioning option. The Facel left the USA and landed in Finland in the 1990s. It is then sold to an English amateur in 2001 who entrusts his car for restoration to a Dutch garage. It is repainted in burgundy red and the interior is now magnolia. In 2002 she changes hands and remains in Holland until 2013 and changes color for this beautiful iridescent blue that dresses her today. The current collector, Mr. M, bought the car in 2015 and registered it in Belgium. Mr. M will never stop taking care of his superb car. In February 2017, the gearbox and ignition system will be overhauled (invoice of 6400 €) and in September 2017, a major general overhaul by the garage "Amicale Facel Vega Holland B.V." will be carried out for more than 17 000 € on invoice. There is no doubt that the car was very well maintained, and our test drive will confirm this. Contact, engine and a soft rumble escapes from the exhaust. Gear lever on D and the fabulous machine will move effortlessly. The V8 is powerful and torquey, yet there's no need to get the 355 hp available to appreciate our test drive. The brakes work perfectly and are enough to stop the 1600 kg machine. There's no doubt that Jean Daninos has achieved a vision that in 2020 is still modern in today's traffic. The prowess of the compromise between an American V8, an English finish, the behaviour of an Italian and the chic of a Parisian evening dress.
