Citroën s’inspire beaucoup de la mode des breaks ou « station-wagon » aux USA pour développer son projet de DS break. C’est l’aboutissement de 2 années de recherches visant à proposer à la clientèle un véhicule polyvalent, à la fois pratique pour les artisans, logeable pour les familles et gardant l’élégance et la technique de la berline. Ce concept en 57, très en vogue aux USA, n’était représenté en France que par le break Simca Marly V8. Pierre Franchiset, l’homme qui a conçu le type H, dessine alors un break fort élégant, pratique et rapide pour l’époque. Au salon de Paris 1958 la voiture est présentée mais ne sortira qu’un an plus tard. Produite de 1959 à 1975, ce sera un succès mondial considérable. Les modèles DS 20 break sont bien équipés de la boite manuelle de l’ID 20 mais possède bien la désignation DS pour les derniers millésimes.
La DS break ici présentée est un modèle mis en circulation le 19 avril 1973. D’après son historique, celle-ci commence sa vie comme taxi parisien jusqu’à la fin des années 70 puis est gardée par son propriétaire jusqu’en 1990. Le second propriétaire qui la gardera près de 30 ans sera celui qui entreprendra une grande remise en état au début des années 2000. Le châssis sera traité, la peinture refaite et la mécanique intégralement remise en état avec l’installation d’un bloc moteur de DS 23 et d’une boite 5 vitesses. Le troisième propriétaire achète la voiture en 2019 et continuera sa remise en état : récemment les quatre jantes ont été repeintes à l’époxy et des pneus Michelin XVS neufs montés. L’allumage à été révisé, le carburateur ainsi que l’hydraulique et les phares directionnels. Seule la sellerie d’origine aura besoin de soins ; celle-ci accuse une certaine usure surtout au niveau du siège conducteur. Notre essai nous donnera entière satisfaction. La DS roule parfaitement et se joue des irrégularités de la route. Le contrôle technique de moins de six mois est favorable et le break se tient prêt à prendre la route vers les beaux jours !

Citroën draws much of its inspiration from the station wagon trend in the USA to develop its DS estate project. It was the culmination of two years of research aimed at offering customers a multi-purpose vehicle that was both practical for tradesmen and families, while retaining the elegance and technical features of the saloon. This concept in '57, which was very popular in the USA, was only represented in France by the Simca Marly V8 estate. Pierre Franchiset, the man who designed the type H, designed a very elegant, practical and fast station wagon for the time. The car was presented at the 1958 Paris Motor Show, but was only released one year later. Produced from 1959 to 1975, it was a considerable worldwide success. The DS 20 station wagon models are equipped with the manual gearbox of the ID 20 but have the DS designation for the last years.
The DS station wagon presented here is a model that was put on the road on 19 April 1973. According to its history, it started its life as a Parisian taxi until the end of the 70's and was kept by its owner until 1990. The second owner who kept it for almost 30 years was the one who undertook a major restauration in the early 2000s. The chassis was treated, the paintwork redone and the mechanics completely overhauled with the installation of a DS 23 engine block and a 5 speed gearbox. The third owner is buying the car in 2019 and will continue the job: recently the four rims have been epoxied and new Michelin XVS tyres fitted. The ignition has been overhauled, the carburetor as well as the hydraulics and the directional lights. Only the original upholstery will need some attention; it shows some wear especially on the driver's seat. Our test drive will give us complete satisfaction. The DS drives perfectly and plays with the irregularities of the road. The technical inspection is less than six months old and the wagon is ready to take the road for the summer!
