On October 6, 1955, at 9 a.m. sharp, the doors of the Grand Palais opened to the Paris Motor Show and there was an immediate rush of customers to the Citroën stand, where the revolutionary Citroën DS 19 was unveiled as a world premiere. On the same evening, nearly 12,000 orders were placed, with a down payment of CHF 80,000 per car and the hope of delivery within the time frame of almost a year. Alongside the Frégate, Versailles or Peugeot 403, the DS was seen as an alien. This is what gives it the enviable status it enjoys today: admired by aesthetes as a work of art, it fascinates by the hydraulic system that manages the suspension and assistance.
The DS 19 which illustrates these pages is a model released in January 1958. Of pinkish grey colour, reference AC 136, it has the blue fabric interior and the Turquoise Blue roof AC 137. It is a car in exceptional condition, mainly original except for the painting redone a few years ago. The upholstery is still that of the time. The odometer reading is most likely the original one. It is in all respects in conformity with its factory exit from the Javel dock and is equipped with rare period Robri accessories along the bodywork. Its operation is flawless and during the test, we were seduced by its softness. The powertrain works flawlessly, the gearbox is controlled with fingertips and the braking, controlled by a very small pedal on these models, is beyond reproach. Recently, the collector Mr R had a new exhaust system installed and the engine was overhauled on this occasion. Very rare are the DS of the first vintages for sale, this one is an exceptional specimen to seize, intended for the most demanding collectors.
This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in La Ferté-Vidame, at the Citroën Centenary, France, on July the 21th, 2019.
