The story of Harley-Davidson started literally in a shed when two young engineers and friends William Davidson and Arthur Harley worked in their spare time on what would become their first motorcycle. Helped by Arthur’s two brothers, Walther and William Davidson and an unknown German immigrant the Harley-Davidson Motor Company was started up on 30th August 1903.

Starting in a shed they probably did not foresee they would become today’s most famous motorcycle brand on the planet when their 3hp single cylinder motorcycle came on the market in 1903. In 1909 the first V-twin appeared (2 cylinders at 45 degrees angle), the hallmark of a Harley-Davidson today. After the 1st World War, the Milwaukee plant was opened leading to worldwide fame. During the 2nd World War, the motorcycle became known as the Liberator. The rest, as they say, is history.

The second World War is over when this 1946 Harley-Davidson is registered in Sweden, making it an original European-supplied one with the speedometer showing kilometres instead of miles. Our Harley still bears its Swedish registration. The fact Harley-Davidson stood for reliability is proven with this Harley as it starts the first time round and runs as you would a Harley-Davidson to run; Loud and clear. This 750cc V-twin produces an almighty sound, which coupled with the 3-speed manual transmission is simply breathtaking.

This ‘46 has a German Steib sidecar, Steib being the largest sidecar producer at the time.

What makes our Harley stand out is that today in 2022 is the fact it does not stand perfectly restored on view in our showroom. The passage of time is beautifully detailed. The paintwork is largely original having been touched up here and there without loosing any of the authentic sense. The leather seating in the Steib also appears to be original with associated wear, 76 years and what appears to be 82,690 km it is three-wheeled history. We say: Leave well alone!
